Endodontics

Treating the roots of decayed and infected teeth to prolong their life and avoid extractions. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry more commonly referred to as root canal treatment. A root filling may be recommended by your dentist for several reasons.

The pulp of the tooth can become infected by decay within the tooth which can spread to form an abscess. The pulp can also be damaged due to trauma. Root fillings are a way to preserve the tooth when the removal of the pulp (nerve) is indicated. The nerve is removed in a managed way so as to keep the tooth clean and dry as possible. A filling material is placed in the resulting space left by the nerve. Infection is prevented by sealing the tooth, and the tooth then can be restored and used as ‘normal’. The aim of root canal treatment is to eradicate any infection inside the tooth and so preserve the tooth.

Periodontics

Keeping your gums healthy. Ultrasonic cleaning, plaque disclosing, full pocket charting and oral hygiene instruction. Surgical root planing as necessary. Gums are the foundation of the teeth. Gum disease leads to the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth.

Resolving gum disease improves your oral heath, enhancing your smile and prolonging the life of your teeth. Advanced gum disease leads to spacing between your teeth and unsightly red bleeding gums. Usually it is accompanied by bad breath or ‘halitosis’. Teeth become loose leading to discomfort and a reduction in function. There is a link between heart disease and periodontitis, and with many other medical conditions (diabetes, for example) good healthy gums are essential. It is possible to treat gum disease (periodontitis) using a variety of techniques; deep cleaning of the teeth, improving home oral hygiene, and surgery. The treatment chosen will depend on the severity of the disease and will be explained to you fully. It will be tailored to your individual needs. In severe cases treatment can be carried out under sedation.

Dentures

Many people lose some or all of their teeth. Dentures, whether full or partial, are a removable solution for the replacement of multiple or completely missing teeth. This is the treatment of choice if there are insufficient teeth to support a bridge. Several impressions of the mouth

are taken using various types of putty. These are then cast into a mould which is used by a laboratory to manufacture your denture. There are many different types of teeth to choose from in different sizes and shades. We also pay attention to the appearance of the artificial gum. You will be guided through the process and given the opportunity to assist in the choice of teeth and therefore the resulting appearance. Dental implants are becoming the alternative option to dentures, but if dentures are the only solution then there is no need to have teeth that look false. With careful planning and thought even full dentures can be made to look natural.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns are used to restore both anterior and posterior teeth that have been broken or are at high risk of breaking due to oversized fillings or fractures. There are a variety of materials available to construct these: gold, porcelain bonded to metal, or all ceramic.

Bridges are fixed or non-removable prosthesis constructed to replace one or more missing teeth. Either one or both teeth adjacent to the space are used to anchor the bridge to restore function as well as appearance. Like crowns, bridges can be made of porcelain bonded to metal or all ceramic. Because there is interference with the adjacent teeth, more and more people are opting for dental implants as an alternative to sacrificing sometimes healthy teeth.

Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery is the branch of dentistry that includes the removal of teeth. Sometimes teeth can be more complicated to extract due to the position, shape or the condition of the tooth. Wisdom teeth (the teeth at the very back of the mouth) can be particularly difficult.

Using the latest digital x-rays the complexity of the extraction can be assessed and treated accordingly. We are also able to offer conscious sedation for extractions. An apicectomy is a surgical technique carried out under local anaesthetic that can be used to remove part of an infected root below the level of the gum enabling the lifespan of the tooth to be increased.
